Welcome to Bewick Bridge Community Primary School
On behalf of the children, staff and governors, I would like to welcome you to Bewick Bridge Community Primary School. We hope you find our website clear, informative and easy to navigate. It is designed to give you a flavour of the vibrant life of our school, the work of our pupils and the quality education we strive to deliver.
Our school is set in spacious grounds in the heart of Cherry Hinton in Cambridge. We share our school site with Little Cherries Nursery and work in partnership to ensure an effective transition for children entering Foundation Stage from the Nursery setting. Visitors to our school comment positively on our size and space, our facilities and the stimulating environment. They describe our atmosphere as respectful and nurturing and one visitor commented that coming to the school was 'like putting on a warm, comforting coat.'
Being the Interim Headteacher of Bewick Bridge Community Primary School gives me great pleasure and I am fully committed to the community of the school striving to ensure that, in the absence of the substantive headteacher, the school serves our local children and their families well.
While it is my priority that the education your child receives here with us will enable them to achieve their academic potential and progress confidently into the next phase of their education, it is also part of my vision that all our children are filled with positive experiences, that they are aware of the endless possibilities that await them and that they are nurtured in order to develop within them, a confidence to embrace whatever comes their way. Underpinning the above, is my relentless commitment to ensuring that the children of Bewick Bridge Community Primary School possess the values that enable them to live well in society and prepares them to deal effectively with the challenges that the modern world presents.
All of my staff share this vision and recognise children as unique individuals with specific talents and needs. They work tirelessly to provide a varied and engaging curriculum and a positive school experience. You’ll find our classrooms to be hives of activity and full of creativity and learning, making Bewick Bridge a special place indeed for children.
If you would like to know more about our school, you are very welcome to come and visit. The children of Bewick Bridge very much enjoy talking about and sharing their achievements and our successes.
We are a one form entry Primary school, serving a diverse community.
Where does the school's name come from?
The school's name tells a story - one which weaves together education, the role of the school in the community, and the history of Cherry Hinton.
The school is named after Revd. Bewick Bridge, who was vicar of St Andrews parish in Cherry Hinton for 17 years from 1816-1833; he founded The very first school in the village in 1832, the year before he died. He also built the vicarage at the end of Fulbourn Old Drift, the road on which our present school stands. Bewick Bridge was a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge, and author of a famous Algebra text book. In 1812 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society.
The concept of a bridge also illustrates something of our values and vision as a community school: a place where many bridges are built; bridges between pupils at the school from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and cultures, between older children and younger ones, between the different generations, between staff, parents and volunteers, and bridges between different families in the neighbourhood. All these bridges help relationships to grow and flourish, characterised by acceptance, trust and respect.
The school also creates a bridge for the children to the wider world - all they learn here brings that world a bit nearer to their understanding and grasp. It is a bridge that connects the children with their own future and destiny too - helping them to discover and develop their talents, abilities and skills.
An African proverb states, "It takes a whole village to educate a child." Bewick Bridge Community Primary School will look to build bridges and create opportunities for many people in Cherry Hinton and further afield to participate in the education and development of our children.
